In many rural communities, the desire for change is not rooted in charity — it’s rooted in opportunity. And at Matamiss Enterprise, we’ve embraced that truth through hands-on training programs that are designed not just to teach but to transform.
We chose to focus on skills like bag making because the impact is immediate and practical. As one of our trainers put it:
“You don’t have to wait 4 or 5 months — within a couple of hours, you can produce a bag, sell it, and make money.”
In areas where access to steady income is limited, these types of skills open new doors. The countryside isn’t filled with people waiting for handouts — it’s filled with untapped potential. When given the tools and training, people don’t just learn — they excel.
“If you gave them the opportunity to learn a skill, they would do it and they would make you proud… they would really, really do it and do it well.”
Our model is simple, but powerful: fast, effective skill transfer, paired with materials and market support. We believe that when people have the ability to earn immediately, they are far more likely to stay engaged, build confidence, and transform their families and communities.
“We are confident that with this model, a lot more people would begin to generate income… Our overall objective is that these people should be able to live on their own sustainably, take care of their households, pay fees, take care of medical bills…”
At Matamiss, it’s not just about pottery — it’s about potential. And it’s working.
